A 2002 Hilux Surf with 86K miles in great shape and with nice rims and tires. $13K Canadian which means, I could, but....
Out of curiosity for those in the know, is this going to take standard 4runner parts of the same generation for the most part?
Yes please

i’m pretty sure it IS a 4runner. just under a different name

I thought so too. Honestly $12K for a 4runner with 140,000km....that’s a great deal.
10/10 would daily, even though I risk death by oncoming traffic

It probably will

Quick search seems to show that it is a 4Runner, I was confused at first because that definitely
doesn’t look like a Hilux. A proper Hilux is a pickup:

Answer is yes. My brother had one of these Surfs when he was based in a remote place in Asia. He would have me buy 4Runner parts for it over here and take them over when we met up for the holidays.

It’s sold as a Hilux Surf in Japanland. While it seems like just a re-badge job, you never know about parts transfer-ability between JDM and USDM vehicles.

desire for one increasing....

Death of your passenger anyway.
B uy it, do a little badge engineering, then triple the price for resale.

I'm more worried about going for a left hand turn and being t boned by an oncoming. But, my drive is basically straight down back Highway, so it is doable

Guess you’ll just need to lift it so you’re above the danger zone. Maybe a tubular exoskeleton as well... For safety.
Reversing through drive thru’s will be fun too.

Having owned a 4Runner of this generation for 1 weekend (I bought a used ’99 Limited with the rear e-locker from a large Toyota dealer, which turned out to have a bad transmission and they thankfully took it back) you have to really want one of these as the actual attributes of it as a vehicle are definitely old school. It’s very narrow and not very roomy inside and slow as balls. I bought it anyway and would have kept it were it not for the bad transmission but still. FYI.

If it’s a diesel, anything for the engine you’ll be overnighting from Japan. Everything else should be interchangeable with NA 4Runner parts, unless it has JDM options that don’t translate to NA parts

I personally don’ t do drive thrus (before the pandemic, I had only ever driven through one once) so it shouldn’t be an issue if I get it

slow and narrow is all good with me!

Oh huh
. In that case, seems like they’re asking 3.0 turbo
diesel money for the base engine. Or maybe their prices have gone up

In that case just remember: Two wrongs don't make a right, but three rights make a left.

It seems like it is in really good shape, but it could be that it is a little overpriced.
With LHD 4runners being so crazy, it is really tempting. Likely wont happen, but one can dream

Not sure what the corresponding Hilux Surf trims were, but on the 4Runner the most desirable version was the ’99-’00 Limited which had a full-time 4wd transfer case and available rear locking diff.
The full-time 4wd was an electronic, auto 4wd, slip-n-grip type setup, not a center differential, but still full-time for on-road, rough weather driving. In ’01 all the trims got the auto 4wd but no more e-locker. Instead they all gained traction control . So the ’99-’00 Limited was the only way to get the auto 4wd + e-locker.
Since this one you found is an ’02 it probably has the auto 4wd & traction control. I believe the auto 4wd was more widespread on the JDM trims earlier than the North America versions but I don’t know the specifics.
(There is much consternation among off-roady 3rd gen 4Runner owners as to whether the traction control is good or bad. I believe it disables itself when you lock the transfer case.)

He also absolutely loved the thing, do it!
